As the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the schedule for the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, all eyes were on the biggest rivalry of the game- India vs Pakistan, who could possibly meet each other thrice in the event if both perform well.
India and Pakistan always attract massive engagement among fans, irrespective of the format they play, along with the venue. The two sides met each other during the previous season of the ODI World Cup in 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
India vs Pakistan could clash three times at World Cup 2027: Group stage, Super 7 and a knockout showdown
The Shubman Gill-led side will begin their WC campaign on October 07 against Australia at the Newlands in Cape Town. The game will already be a massive, pressurized contest for the blue brigade, who will soon turn their focus against Pakistan on October 10 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
That will be the first contest between the two sides in the Group stage. If the pre-seeded teams qualify, then the second possible fixture for India against Babar Azam’s team would be on November 07 at the Newlands in Cape Town.

India may face this same side in the final, for which both teams need to play with full strength. The runners-up of the last season will also face England on November 11 in Gqeberha, while they take on the New Zealand side on November 04 at the Boland Park in Paarl.
What happened in the previous ODI WC edition in South Africa between India and Pakistan?
The last game between the two sides in South Africa during an ODI WC edition took place in 2003 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, where the fine 101-run knock off 126 balls of Saeed Anwar gave them the platform. Some of the small contributions from the rest of the batting line-up pushed the Proteas to 273/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
India completed the chase by six wickets with 26 balls to spare. Sachin Tendulkar played one of the memorable knocks of 98 runs in 75 balls at a strike rate of 130.67 with 12 boundaries and one six, while Yuvraj Singh remained unbeaten on 50 runs in 53 deliveries.
