Can India still qualify for Women's T20 World Cup 2026 semis after shocking loss to South Africa?
Can India women qualify for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals after their shocking defeat against South Africa by six wickets at Old Trafford in Manchester?

On June 21, India experienced their first defeat of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 against South Africa when they failed to defend 158 runs at Old Trafford in Manchester. The loss came after their two successive victories against Pakistan and the Netherlands at Edgbaston and Leeds, respectively.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side were not up to the mark on their captain’s special occasion of the 200th T20I clash, where no male or female cricketer had ever reached before. They struggled in their middle order batting and couldn’t hold onto several catches to put pressure on themselves.
How India's Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has unfolded so far
India opened their account with a 64-run victory against the arch-rivals, Pakistan, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Smriti Mandhana’s superb knock of 64 runs off 44 balls, along with the help of 34 runs in 17 balls by Richa Ghosh, with the help of five boundaries and one six. Meanwhile, Deepti Sharma’s 5/10 in four overs earned them a 64-run win.
In the second fixture, India continued the same performance at Leeds in Headingly against the Dutch side. After posting their very first 200+ score on the board, the blue brigade blew away the Netherlands for 114 and gained the victory by 95 runs.

Against the Proteas in Manchester, their weak middle order couldn’t take advantage of their top order after a strong start. Meanwhile, their several dropped catches cost them the game for a six-wicket defeat against the Rainbow Nation.
India's semi-final qualification scenarios explained — What they need vs Bangladesh and Australia
After all the teams from Group A played three games each, India sit in second position of the points table with two wins at a net run-rate of +2.511. On the other hand, South Africa and Bangladesh remained at the third and fourth ranks of the table with an NRR of -0.546 and -0.641, respectively.
India’s next encounter will be against Bangladesh in Manchester on June 25, before they face their biggest challenge of the event against Australia on June 28 at Lord’s in London.

If the blue brigade win both their remaining clashes, their superior net run rate will help them qualify for the semifinal. But a loss in either game could make the path difficult. They will hope the South Africa side to lose one of their last games against either the Netherlands or Bangladesh, who will need big wins to qualify for the semis.
If both India and South Africa lose one game out of their remaining two, the team with a better run rate will qualify for the semifinal of the competition.
