India's WTC 2025/27 qualification scenario after draw against Sri Lanka in 2nd Test

India came into the second Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka on the back of their massive 165-run victory in the opening clash in Galle. But they needed to continue the winning journey even at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo during the second Test. However, a draw made it incredibly hard for them to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025/27. 

The Shubman Gill-led side gave their all in the second innings with the ball but failed to make an impact even on the fifth-day surface, which looked benign and slow to trouble any of the batters, with Sonal Dinusha standing like a rock before them with twin centuries in both innings.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, India posted a massive score of 503 runs for the loss of nine wickets to declare in 138 overs as their new number three, Devdutt Padikkal, smashed his second century, in the form of 117 runs off 193 balls at a strike rate of more than 60, thanks to 12 boundaries. Dhruv Jurel also cracked a dashing unbeaten 115-run knock with nine fours and two sixes.

Sri Lanka were bundled out for 290 runs in their first innings, with Pasindu Sooriyabandara getting 80 runs off 133 balls, thanks to nine boundaries, while Dinusha slammed his second century of the series in the form of 103 runs.

With the threat of rain in mind, India decided to enforce the follow-on. The hosts were reduced to 218/6 from 178/2 to inspire the bowling side. But Dinusha stood like a wall and ended with an unbeaten 133-run knock as both teams shook hands after SL batted 154 overs and took a massive lead of over 200 runs.

India have held their fifth position in the WTC 2025/27 points table after the draw against Sri Lanka. They have collected five wins, four defeats, and two draws in the 11 clashes. They are behind Bangladesh, whose PCT ratio of 55.56 is higher than India’s 51.52.

Australia and South Africa stand in the top two positions with a PCT rate of 80 and 75, respectively. For the Indian side, it will be a huge challenge now, with them needing to win their last seven Tests against New Zealand and Australia.

They will play the Kiwis in an away two-match Test series before facing Australia at home in the five-match series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027.
