IPL 2025, KKR vs PBKS: What Happens if Rain Abandons Match 44 at Eden Gardens?

Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings face a crucial clash at Eden Gardens, but rain threatens to wash out the match. A washout would dent KKR’s playoff hopes while slightly boosting PBKS’s position without affecting their net run rate.

KKR vs PBKS

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are playing the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on April 26 in an important IPL 2025 match. Matchday is the second time KKR and PBKS will face each other this year, after PBKS had a comfortable win by protecting a dismal total of 112 over KKR in their first meeting this season.

In today's match, PBKS put together a formidable total of 201 in the regulation 20 overs, which puts KKR under considerable pressure. However, just before the start of the second inning, rain intervened, and efficiently, the covers were brought to the field. However, there was a bit of wind floating about the ground that could also conduct clouds away from the stadium, which should get us back to the game nice and quickly. The playing conditions state that a minimum of 5 overs must be played of KKR's innings for a result to occur. In the event rain continues and the match cannot be completed, both teams would gain one point for the abandoned match. If the rain affects play so that KKR can only face a 5-over chase, then they would have to chase only 61 in the revised target.

How a Washout Could Impact the Teams

For KKR, the situation is very serious. They are in seventh place with 3 wins from eight matches, and any further losses (or, in today's case, a washout) will leave them dangerously close to elimination. KKR cannot afford any further setbacks with every match so crucially important, and today could be a key juncture in their season.

On the other side of the fence is PBKS, who are enjoying a decent season so far, sitting at fifth place with 5 wins from eight matches. If they win today, they can still keep their chances for a top-four playoff finish alive, but even in case of a washout, they will move up the table and increase their points by one, and more importantly, not suffer deterioration to their net run rate (NRR). Of course they would have liked a win since it would give them more momentum and confidence.
