In Match 49 of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) managed to beat riding-high Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets in a gripping contest, chasing down a target of 191 in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6. CSK made a daring 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a challenging run chase that left gleeful, luckless fans on a rollercoaster ride!
CSK started positively while batting first in their innings despite losing Yuzvendra Chahal (4 off 32 balls), Arshdeep Singh (2 off 25 balls), and Marco Jansen (2 off 30 balls) early, but watch as Sam Curran changes the tide of the match with a sensational 88 off 47 balls Anchored the innings with a blend of aggression and calmness, Dewald Brevis scoring 32 off 26 and Ravindra Jadeja 17 off 12 gave easy runs in late overs. PBKS's bowlers, with Khaleel Ahmed (3/4) and Matheesha Pathirana (4/5), took wickets at regular intervals to ensure that CSK wouldn't run away. CSK finished up at 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a decently competitive target and a chaseable score on a convincing batting track.
PBKS began their chase positively with openers Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh putting runs on the board early. Iyer led from the front with a match-defining 72 off 41 balls, his class showing with solid pathing off the right shots. Prabhsimran played a complimentary role, scoring a well-made 54 off 36 balls, which kept the required rate on par throughout the innings. Shashank Singh's late blitz of 23 off 12 balls gave the impetus needed to hurry up the chase. CSK’s bowlers fought back in that phase of the innings, led by Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32) and Arshdeep Singh (3/2), taking a total of 6 wickets. It is to say that it wasn’t enough to stop PBKS. Contributions from Khaleel Ahmed (2 off 28), Matheesha Pathirana (2 off 45), and Ravindra Jadeja (1 off 32) were minimal, and PBKS sealed the chase in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6.

Prabhsimran Singh (PBKS): Talked about the opening partnership with Arya; they started at camps in pre-season and said all the timing and the trust were with Shreyas Iyer (72 off 41) in the chase. Said he was pleased to contribute with 54 off 36 for the win; gave a lot of credit to the coach, Ricky Ponting, for building a supportive environment where the captain and the coach lift players up (after poor performances). Said the team wanted to focus on making the playoffs, which is not something PBKS has accomplished for a while. clapping and cheering for as much as possible.
MS Dhoni (CSK Captain): Dhoni said 190/6 was 15 runs short, despite the Curran's 88 off 47 and Brevis's 32 off 26, and said Brevis was full of energy. Dhoni said the catching needs to be better and that they lost 4 wickets in the 19th over, leaving 7 balls left on the best home wicket of IPL 2025, and was frustrated to get that wrong.
Shreyas Iyer (PBKS captain and Player of the match): Iyer said that he always enjoys chasing big totals, plays with instinct, and backs himself. He stated that due to net practices with fast bowlers, he was very confident. Although it was humid and it was a tough fielding condition, Iyer was tactical as captain in leading the required over-rate. He said coach Ricky Ponting pushed the players to be aggressive early against good bowlers. Iyer, together with Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, played the innings smart and aggressively, which got PBKS over the line and kept Punjab winning.
