The 2026 edition has already started with incredible excitement and enthusiasm.
When the franchise tournament began nearly 18 years ago, there was speculation on where this competition would reach in the future. But, thanks to some special performances with both bat and ball in hand, with dramatic close finishes and quality, the league has breached several records in the economic structure.
Kotak report reveals IPL’s growing economic impact
The reports have noted that the IPL ecosystem is valued at nearly USD 18 billion as of FY25, placing it among the world’s leading sporting leagues. The event, which runs for nearly two months, generates an economic value to India’s entire sports industry, which has been estimated at about USD 19 billion.
According to the report, the league contributes between USD 182 million and USD 6.7 billion annually to the economy of the country through its wide-ranging ecosystem, including the media, sponsorships, and the ancillary sectors. The financial growth of the media rights has been in the media rights.
It has gone up to USD 918 million in 2008 to UD 6.2 billion for the 2023-2027 cycle, which has reflected a strong annual growth rate and outpacing several global leagues. Advertising revenues are projected to reach around USD 600 million in 2025, which indicates the robust monetization of viewership.
Kotak also addressed that the IPL franchises are operating at a unique financial model, deriving over 70% of their revenues from the shared media rights and sponsorship pools. This has ensured the predictable cash flows, making the team resemble.
The report also underscored the league’s resilience, noting that despite temporary setbacks along with the decline in valuations due to the pandemic, the league has bounced back, crossing USD 10 billion in value in recent years.
How IPL 2026 continues to boost jobs, tourism, and revenue
The IPL 2026 has created thousands of direct and indirect jobs, including security, logistics, and broadcasting events. The local economies in host cities show a 20-25% boost in revenue during match days, benefiting the street food vendors, local transport operations, and the businesses.
The IPL 2026 has also triggered a significant travel surge, with the opening game between the Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Ishan Kishan-led Sunrisers Hyderabad side seeing flight searches jump 43% and hotel bookings rise by more than 10%. Cities like Mumbai, Lucknow, and Delhi went up by 40% increases in hotel bookings on match days.
The hotel occupancies in the host have reached 90-100% on match days, with a higher rate of 20-30% for hotel rates. The valuation is estimated at around $19 billion in 2026, with projections to be doubled by 2030.
