There was a period in Indian cricket between 2017 and 2020 where the entire fame was only around Virat Kohli. Wherever he plays, the fans would come in massive numbers only to get a glimpse of the former captain, who was fabulous for the national side with both bat and in the leadership group across the three formats.

But then came the premier pacer of the Indian side, Jasprit Bumrah, who changed the direction of many games in India’s favor with several wickets and incredible moments. The Gujarat-born has impressed in every phase of the game, including the powerplay, middle overs, and the death overs.

Munaf Patel keeps Virat Kohli’s popularity over Jasprit Bumrah 

The former Indian pacer, Munaf Patel, has offered a candid take on the popularity of Bumrah and the larger fast-bowling ecosystem in the country. His impact in the match-winning ability has lifted his stature around the game, often placing him in the same bracket as batting icon Kohli.

“How will that happen, sir? Look at Virat Kohli’s popularity and Bumrah’s popularity. There is a difference. Bumrah is a star, no doubt, but there is still a difference when you compare his popularity with someone like Virat Kohli.” The Delhi Capitals batting coach, Munaf Patel, expressed on The Times of India.

“If you ask me to find bowlers who can bowl at 125 kmph, I can bring many. But if you ask for bowlers who can consistently hit 140+, they are very rare. And the reality is, if you bowl 140+, you won’t go unnoticed. There’s almost no chance.” Patel addressed.

The World Cup-winner highlighted the key gap, noting that even though the country has started producing quick bower, they still lack awareness, training methods, and proper guidance at the grassroots level.

“It’s actually the easiest pathway right now. If you are a fast bowler who can hit 135–140+, you can get into the Indian team quickly. But if you bowl at 125, no matter how much you swing the ball, you may not even get picked in IPL auctions.” The former fast bowler concluded.
