The IPL 2026 season is likely to kick off on March 26 and the finale is to take place on May 31 tentatively, but the complete lineup of the matches is going to be announced later. IPL Governing Council, as per sources, has made a decision to give the entire timetable only after the Election Commission of India reveals the dates of voting for the next assembly polls.

Poll Dates Delay Finalisation of IPL 2026 Match Venues

The assembly elections are going to be conducted in April-May in the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Kerala, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is very much concerned about security issues while the elections are going on, as it will have to share the same grounds - the polling and match days would have to be carefully chosen, not to interfere with each other.

According to a report published by Dainik Jagran, the BCCI has already selected 18 venues for IPL 2026. Among them are the big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad, and also venues like Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Visakhapatnam, Ranchi, and Raipur. But the final distribution of games is still pending the election dates to be confirmed.

Uncertainty Over Home Venues Adds to IPL 2026 Schedule Delay

Bengaluru and Jaipur, which are two of the possible home cities, are still uncertain. According to reports, the IPL Governing Council has given RCB and RR until January 27 to guarantee that the respective city’s traditional home ground can host the matches.

RCB is thinking about other places like the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and Raipur, while the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has not been open to cricket due to last year’s awful stampede incident. On the other hand, the internal administration problems in the Rajasthan Cricket Association have put Jaipur’s ability to host IPL games in doubt. The IPL 2026 schedule is likely to be in the wait-and-see approach until the election dates are officially declared.
