Jasprit Bumrah injury update ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

India have dealt a massive blow as their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, is set to miss the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting on August 15 in Galle. The reports have claimed that the seamer continues to feel discomfort in his left knee after an assessment took place at the Centre of Excellence in the BCCI.

Bumrah, after taking a break post the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for the Mumbai Indians, returned to action during the three-match ODI series against England, where he missed the third clash due to an injury. He was racing against time to be fit for the Sri Lanka series.

The BCCI CoE members have decided not to take any risk with Bumrah and keep him fresh and injury-free, keeping in mind the number of ODIs he would play to prepare himself for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

The Ahmedabad-born got an injection for the knee issue that flared up during the business end of the T20 World Cup 2026, as the 32-year-old was given the injection as scheduled last month and completed the recovery, which took more time than initially expected. There were discussions of keeping him ready for the second Test in Colombo.

“There have been instances in the past where players have been rushed back to cricket, and have broken down. You can't take that risk again. Especially with Bumrah. So complete recovery is the only goal, and there is a lot of cricket left in the year. There is the Asian Games, the tour of New Zealand and even the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year.” The TOI report expressed.

In the absence of Bumrah, the BCCI selectors will need to name a replacement in their 15-member squad. Auqib Nabi Dar could finally get his first call-up to the squad in place of Bumrah, while Mohammed Siraj will again need to lead the pace attack.

The Hyderabad-born has been tremendous for the blue brigade in the longest format, especially in the recent few years, having collected overall 140 wickets in 86 innings at an average of 29.74 and a strike rate of 50.60, thanks to five five-wicket hauls.

The team will assemble in Mumbai on August 3 for their departure on the following day. After a three-day practice game, the opening Test begins on August 15.
