KKR vs LSG, IPL 2023: Pooran, Bishnoi seal LSGs' playoffs chances with thrilling one-run win

68th Match, IPL: Lucknow Super Giants 176 for 8 (Pooran 58, Shardul Thakur 2-27, Narine 2-28) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 175 for 7 (Rinku 67*, Roy 45, Bishnoi 2-23, Yash Thakur 2-32) by one run

Lucknow Super Giants defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by one run at Eden Gardens to become the third team to qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League in 2023. They did so despite a Rinku Singh scare. They finished with 17 places, tied with Chennai Super Rulers, yet LSG’s mediocre net run rate implied they completed third. They will now compete in the Eliminator on May 24 in Chennai against the fourth qualifying team.

Toward the beginning of the day, LSG got an opportunity to get a main two completion. However, due to CSK’s earlier victory over Delhi Capitals by 77 runs, LSG needed to defeat KKR by approximately 97 runs to surpass CSK. That wouldn’t be easy, especially since LSG scored 176 in the first innings. They appeared unlikely to score at 73 for 5 in the 11th over, but Nicholas Pooran’s 30-ball 58 lifted them.

Before they lost their way in the middle overs, KKR had a great start. The final score was 56 from the final four overs, followed by 41 from two. In the 19th, Rinku took 20 from Naveen-ul-Haq, leaving 21 for the final.

On the first ball of the final over, Vaibhav Arora bowled Yash Thakur and scored a single. After that, there were two wides, two dots, and 18 required from three balls. Rinku made the following shot for a six, but only managed a four off the fifth. The margin of defeat was only reduced by a six on the final delivery.

LSG’s hit-and-miss start

Subsequent to being sent in, LSG lost a wicket in the third over of the innings when Harshit Rana bobbed out Karan Sharma for 3. Prerak Mankad attempted to assault yet he was more similar to a nervous wreck. In the wake of being on 4 off eight balls, he got five fours in the following two overs yet scarcely looked agreeable. His attempt at an uppercut against Arora was stopped at deep cover after the powerplay ended. Two balls later, Arora skipped out Marcus Stoinis for a duck, making it 55 for 3.

Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine hauled LSG back further. Varun got Quinton de Kock to top-edge to deep midwicket, while Narine mistimed Krunal Pandya’s slog sweep to deep square leg. De Kock finished the night with 28 out of 27 balls, his only boundaries being two sixes in the powerplay.

Pooran hits them beyond the boundary

Pooran was ranked No. 7, a ball after the midway imprint in the innings. Right away, Varun created an outside edge, but Pooran had played it with soft hands, so the ball went for four and fell short and to the left of first slip. However, Pooran cut the following ball for four because it was too short. After that, Varun overcompensated and went for the fuller shot, which resulted in a straight six.

Pooran increased to 23 runs off ten deliveries with another six in the spinner’s subsequent over. As Harshit’s Impact Player, KKR brought in Suyash Sharma, who bowled three overs for 1 for 21. Pooran ensured that the leg spinner did not bowl another over by welcoming Suyash with yet another six and ending the over with a four.

Pooran reached his half-century with a six off Shardul Thakur in the 19th over. The batter attempted a hat trick of sixes when Thakur caught him at deep third after sending the subsequent ball over the boundary. K Gowtham hit the final two deliveries of the 20th over for sixes and fours to propel LSG past 175. Andre Russell only gave up three runs off the first four deliveries.

KKR quick out of the blocks

KKR had an exceptionally difficult undertaking before them: they expected to win in 8.5 overs to lift their net run rate above Rajasthan Royals’ to remain alive for the end of the season games. In the first two overs, Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer scored 30 runs, but only 15 came in the next two. Roy hit three fours off Krunal’s initial three balls in the fifth over however Iyer tumbled to Gowtham in the following, and KKR completed the powerplay on 61 for 1.

Rinku takes it close

In this match, KKR beat the required rate by a significant margin. They were 78 for 1 after eight overs, but they could only manage 30 runs in the next six, losing three wickets. Nitish Rana was caught at extra cover by Ravi Bishnoi, Roy was bowled by Krunal for 45 off 28 balls, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz was bowled by Yash Thakur with a slower ball for 10 off 15.

With 63 required from 28 balls, Russell hit Bishnoi for a six but was bowled on the following ball. Rinku was still in the center, and assuming there is one thing this season has shown us, it is that no game is over till Rinku is batting. He took Naveen for three fours and six in the 19th over on his way to his unbeaten 67 off 33 balls, but when he needed 18 from three balls, he could only hit 6, 4, and 6.
