A new report has come that the franchises of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be allowed to retain a maximum of five players ahead of the mega auction for the 2026 season. It has been revealed that the deadline for the retention announcement will be November 05, which has already been communicated to the teams, and the auction will be held between November 25 and 29.

The WPL, according to the sent email, revealed that a maximum of three capped Indian players, a maximum of two overseas players, and a maximum of two uncapped Indian players will be allowed to be retained. If a side decides to retain five players, one of them will have to be an uncapped Indian player.

The WPL will also have the right-to-match (RTM) for the very first time to buy back one player that was part of their squad in 2025. The auction purse will be of INR 15 crores as the slabs will be of INR 3.5 crores for the first player, INR 2.5 crores for the second player, INR 1.75 crores for the third player, INR 1 crore for the fourth, and INR 50 lakh for the fifth player.

WPL to allow five retentions in mega auction ahead of 2026 season

If a side decides to go with five players, they will use INR 9.25 crore for their purse, while for the four players, the deduction will be INR 8.75 crore. For three, it would come down to INR 7.75 crore, while four players will go for INR 6 crore. A franchise can use a maximum of five RTMs, but if they go for five players, then there won’t be any option for RTM.

The WPL committee has revealed that a different amount can be considered in the retention slab from the guideline price. However, if the actual amount paid is higher than the slab, then the amount will be deducted from the auction purse. A minimum of 50 lakh has been set for the uncapped Indian players.

The WPL has also expressed that the retention list will have to be submitted by November 05, where the sides must then share their players’ list for auction by November 07. Two weeks later, the BCCI will share its list of players at the mega auction.
