When the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) crossed the 100-run mark inside the powerplay during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, the visitors looked set to cross the 250-run mark in their allotted 20 overs.

Abhishek Sharma blew away the Punjab bowlers around the park, irrespective of the pacers and the spinners. Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, and Vijaykumar Vyshak- none of them had any answer for how they would stop the southpaw opening batter.

Marco Jansen’s one-handed catch dismisses Ishan Kishan

After the dismissals of Abhishek and Travis Head in the same over, it was important for the middle order of the 2016 champions to get the boundaries consistently to keep the momentum going. Their captain, Ishan Kishan, started the 14th over on a high as he nailed the left-arm pacer, Arshdeep Singh, into the stands for a massive six.

Kishan tried to finish the over with another six. It was a full delivery on the middle and leg of the southpaw, who whipped it off his pads to the cow corner region as it looked like the ball would cross the fence quite comfortably.

But Marco Jansen had some different plans as he rushed to the position from the deep mid-wicket region. He ran to his right and plucked the ball in the air casually with his right hand inside the boundary rope to send back the batter for 27 runs in 17 balls.

It was Arshdeep’s first wicket in five T20 outings, as his last wicket was of Will Jacks during the T20 World Cup semifinal against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

SRH lose momentum with successive wickets

Abhishek offered the best start to the Hyderabad side with a fine knock of 74 runs in 28 balls, thanks to five boundaries and eight sixes, while he got full support from Travis Head’s 38 runs in 15 balls, shouldering on five boundaries and one six.

They raced away to 120 runs without any damage in eight overs before adding just 75 runs for the loss of four wickets in the next 51 balls. Their hope remained on Heinrich Klassen, who, however, was struggling on 27 runs in 25 balls.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing)- SRH 218/5 (Abhishek Sharma 74, Shashank Singh 2/20) vs PBKS
