MCA makes special request to BCCI to make web series on Mumbai's senior team on Amazon Prime

MCA has sought BCCI's permission to produce a 'The Test'-style web series on Mumbai's senior team for Amazon Prime, documenting their 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign from Day 1 to the final match

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has made a special request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to get permission to document its upcoming domestic season. The association has been planning to film a documentary series in the mould of ‘The Test’ on Amazon Prime, which ran for three seasons on Australian cricket.

Since the Sandpaper Gate in 2018, a web series was produced on the Australian side, which showed their defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018/19 and 2020/21 against India, as well as how they pulled up to win the Ashes in 2019 and 2023, and how they won it at home.

What exactly is MCA's plan? Inside the docu-series that will follow Mumbai's entire 2026-27 season

The MCA has already hired a renowned director, Patrick Graham, for the role, which reflects their strong vision of showing the depth and dressing room details of the Mumbai side.

“We have requested a few permissions from the BCCI as we want to document the entire season of the Mumbai senior team. Whether it takes the form of a web series or a documentary will be decided as we progress, but the idea is to give fans a unique look at what goes on behind the scenes with the Mumbai team throughout the season.” The MCA president, Ajinkya Naik, revealed to the Indian Express.

The Mumbai association has been trying hard to get a positive response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as they met the chief executive officer, Hemang Amin, on the matter. It’s the first such proposal from any domestic board.

“We want to capture the journey from Day 1 of our senior team’s preparations for the Ranji Trophy right through to the final match of the season. Mumbai cricket has such a rich heritage, and we felt, ‘why not showcase it to the world?’ Let people see what goes into the making of a 42-time Ranji Trophy champion side.” Naik added.

If given permission, the MCA will cover the Mumbai senior team from their practice session to the players’ journey through the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ranji Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

How successful has 'The Test' been? Why MCA wants the same Amazon Prime formula for Mumbai

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Test’ has been an incredible success globally, growing into one of the most successful sports documentary teams of all time. It has been highly praised for the unfiltered dressing room access, which captures the team’s trophy celebration, wins, losses, and the emotional journey.

It showed the ups and downs in the life of the players through the success and failure of the game, including the Ashes, the BGT, the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023/25 and 2021/23 finals, and the foreign trips to Sri Lanka and Pakistan

If MCA gets the same Prime formula for the Mumbai team’s web series, then it will disclose the incredible process of the team becoming the most successful in India, domestically. The other teams would also look to learn from this.
