Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has dismissed reports suggesting that he could enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction as a British citizen. Speculation began after he reportedly considered registering for the auction following his recent acquisition of British citizenship.
The rumours gained attention after Amir registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a UK national in the Platinum category. This led to reports that he could also enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction, raising hopes of seeing the former Pakistan international play in the tournament.
However, Amir has now clarified his position and confirmed that he will not register for the IPL 2027 mini-auction. His statement puts an end to the speculation surrounding his possible entry into the auction pool ahead of the event scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
Mohammad Amir dismisses IPL 2027 auction reports on X
Mohammad Amir has put an end to the speculation about his participation in the IPL 2027 auction. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the 34-year-old former Pakistan fast bowler clarified that the reports about his possible IPL entry were incorrect. He wrote, "Hi everyone just wanted to clarify news regarding IPL is not true."
There is a precedent for a former Pakistan international playing in the IPL after acquiring British citizenship. Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2012 and 2015. His participation had raised the possibility of Amir following a similar path, but Amir has now denied the reports about his IPL 2027 auction entry.

No Pakistani citizens have played in the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008. Following the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai that year, political and diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan led to Pakistani players being excluded from the tournament. Amir's clarification has now put an end to the latest speculation about his possible participation.
Why his British passport and APL draft entry sparked the IPL buzz
Mohammad Amir’s British citizenship sparked speculation about his possible participation in the IPL 2027 mini-auction. He obtained British citizenship in May 2026 and has since played domestic cricket in England as a local player. His appearances in competitions such as the T20 Blast and The Hundred added to the interest surrounding his future in franchise cricket.
The rumours grew after Amir registered for the upcoming Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as an English player. Several reports suggested that the former Pakistan fast bowler could also enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction. His British citizenship raised questions about his eligibility, as Pakistani citizens have generally been unavailable to participate in the IPL.
There is also a previous example of a former Pakistan international playing in the IPL after acquiring British citizenship. However, Amir has now clarified that he will not register for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, putting an end to speculation about his possible participation.
What it means for the IPL 2027 mini-auction in Goa and Amir’s future
Mohammad Amir's decision not to register for the IPL 2027 mini-auction means he will not be part of the player pool for the event in Goa on December 16. His clarification has also put an end to the speculation about his possible return to the IPL after acquiring British citizenship.
Amir enjoyed a successful international career with Pakistan across all three formats. He represented the national team in 61 ODIs, taking 81 wickets. In T20 Internationals, he claimed 71 wickets in 62 matches, while he picked up 119 wickets in 36 Test appearances.
The left-arm fast bowler initially retired from international cricket in 2020 but later returned to the Pakistan team. He eventually retired from international cricket in 2024. Although he will not feature in the IPL 2027 auction, Amir could continue his career in overseas domestic and franchise cricket.
