The left-arm pacer of the Pakistan side, Mohammad Amir, has confirmed in a shocking statement that he will feature in the 2027 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as an overseas player, having earned British citizenship and played the PSL as a foreign player.

Amir is currently in England and representing the Trent Rockets side in The Hundred 2026 as a local player due to his British passport. He came into the squad as a replacement for the injured David Payne and became eligible as a domestic player, having retired from the national side.

What exactly did Mohammad Amir say about playing PSL 2027 as an overseas star?

In a recent podcast on Wisden, Amir revealed that he would play in the PSL 2027 as an overseas player. He can, however, register himself as a local player in the competitions in England, including The Hundred.

The PSL franchises will need to use one of their overseas players’ slots if they want to have Amir in the team for the 2027 season, which is expected to be the left-arm pacer’s final appearance in the tournament before he steps away from franchise cricket in Pakistan.

The Pakistan-born retired from international cricket in 2020 before returning ahead of the T20 World Cup. In the PSL, having played for the three sides over the years, he has picked up 98 wickets in 93 innings at an economy rate of 7.72.

When did Mohammad Amir get British citizenship? The timeline explained

Amir married Narjis Khan, a British citizen, in 2016, as this became the legal pathway for his UK residency. During the period between 2017 and 2024, he lived and played quite regularly in England through the T20 leagues and county cricket.

Between early 2024 and 2026, he obtained British Citizenship around May 2026, which was key to his playing status globally. He was issued a UK passport after being able to play as a local player. He played in England’s T20 Blast 2026 as a domestic player and The Hundred 2026.

Could Amir's overseas status open the door to an IPL 2027 return?

As per the rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) policy, Pakistani players are not allowed to feature in the competition due to the political relationships between the two sides. They haven’t played in the IPL for more than one and a half decades.

But it could change in 2027 when Amir can register for the IPL 2027 as a local player, as an England player. But it will be up to the franchise members and the selectors to decide whether they would pick the 35-year-old in the IPL.
