Veteran Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami’s brother, Mohammed Kaif, has been booked in Lucknow after a woman accused him of sexually exploiting her on the promise of marriage. The Ashiana police registered a case against Kaif and others late Sunday night. According to the woman, she met Kaif after moving to the NCR in 2020 following her divorce. The two became friends and started meeting regularly, after which Kaif allegedly promised to marry her.
The woman has alleged that Kaif repeatedly had sexual relations with her on the pretext of marriage. She claimed that on September 9, 2023, she went to Kolkata at Kaif’s request, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted in a hotel. The police have registered the case and are investigating the allegations. Kaif has been named in the complaint, while the allegations are yet to be established.
The case has also brought attention to earlier legal allegations involving Mohammed Shami and his family. In March 2018, Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, filed a police complaint in Kolkata against the cricketer and several members of his family. However, Shami himself was not charged with rape in that case. The earlier complaints and the latest case against his brother are separate legal matters, and the allegations in both cases remain subject to investigation and court proceedings.

The woman alleged that Mohammed Kaif assured her that he would marry her, which led her to leave her job as a cabin crew member with an airline in Delhi. Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, she said they first connected on Instagram in 2020. She told Kaif that she was divorced and had a son, but he allegedly said he had no objection to her past or her child. She claimed that he told her, “I love you very much, and I will marry only you.”
According to Dainik Bhaskar, the woman said their relationship became closer as they met while travelling. She alleged that whenever she asked Kaif about marriage, he would call her to the city where he was staying and have sexual relations with her. She said she later approached the DCP East’s office after submitting complaints at the Ashiyana and Vibhuti Khand police stations.

The woman first approached Ashiyana police station because she had previously lived in the area. However, she alleged that the police told her that the matter did not fall under their jurisdiction. She then approached Vibhuti Khand police station, saying that the hotel where she had stayed with Kaif came under its jurisdiction. After receiving no relief, she submitted a complaint to DCP East, Lucknow.
The investigation has now been handed over to the ACP Vibhuti Khand. The woman has also recorded her statement in connection with the case. Police are examining the complaint and investigating the allegations made against Mohammed Kaif.
Separately, an arrest warrant was issued against Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and his elder brother Hasid Ahmed by a Kolkata court following domestic violence allegations made by Shami’s estranged wife Hasin Jahan. The court gave Shami 15 days to surrender and apply for bail as he was abroad with the Indian team. The warrant against him was kept in abeyance for 15 days, while the court ordered the immediate execution of the warrant against his brother.
