Mohammed Shami gives strong message to selectors with Ranji match-winning fifer

Indian right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Shami has sent another clear message to the selectors about his fitness and form as the fast bowler claimed a fifer to secure a strong win for Bengal against Gujarat in the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26. 

On the fourth and final day of the match, Bengal declared their second innings for 214/8, as the hosts set a 327-run fourth innings target for Gujarat, who were bundled out for 185 runs, as Bengal won by 141 runs. In the fourth innings, Urvil Patel was not out for 105 runs, while Jaymeet Patel scored 45 runs, and Aarya Desai (13) was the only other batter in that innings to manage a double-digit score. While Gujarat were once fighting at 153/3, they lost their last seven wickets for only 32 runs, where Shami picked up four wickets.

Mohammed Shami recorded fifer in Bengal's win

In the fourth innings of the match, Mohammed Shami had the bowling figures of 10-1-38-5, as it was his 12th five-wicket haul in his first-class cricket career. Shami started the fourth innings strongly by dismissing the opener Abhishek Desai for a golden duck on the very first delivery of the innings. Later, the Indian fast bowlers dismissed Jaymeet Patel (45), Vishal Jayswal (1), Siddharth Desai (0), and Arzan Nagwaswalla (0).

During Gujarat's first innings, while Shahbaz Ahmed recorded a six-wicket haul (6/34), Shami took three wickets, with bowling figures of 18.3-6-44-3. As Shahbaz scored a valuable 20 runs during Bengal's second innings and also took three wickets in the fourth innings (3/60), he won the Player of the Match award. Meanwhile, another Indian pacer Akash Deep claimed one wicket in both innings of the match (1/31 & 1/38).

Mohammed Shami took seven wickets in previous fixture

In the first round game of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, where Bengal hosted Uttarakhand, Shami took seven wickets by recording a three-wicket haul (3/37) and another four-wicket haul (4/38).
