Mohit Sharma named CSK bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027

The former Indian and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer, Mohit Sharma, is set to be appointed as the bowling coach of the franchise ahead of the 2027 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). That will strengthen their coaching set-up after two successive seasons of weakness and issues.

Mohit has played in 120 games in IPL history, out of which he featured in four seasons for the Super Kings between 2013 and 2015, along with 2019, when he played just one game in the entire season. His final encounter in the league came in IPL 2025 for the Delhi Capitals (DC), in which edition he picked up just two wickets in eight innings.

The reports have been confirmed by the CEO of the five-time champions, Kasi Viswanathan, who revealed that Mohit’s name was recommended by their current head coach, Zaheer Khan, as the star player was their trump card in the bowling department.

“Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well, and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach. The next set of coaching staff will also be recruited on Zaheer's recommendation in the coming weeks,” Viswanathan said.

Mohit Sharma retired from all forms of cricket towards the end of 2025, bringing an end to the career that saw 34 international appearances and more than a decade in the IPL.

“Today, with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. A very special thank you to the Haryana Cricket Association for being the backbone of my career.” The former Indian pacer reflected.

“And my deepest gratitude to Anirudh Sir, whose constant guidance and belief in me shaped my path in ways words cannot express. Thank you to the BCCI, my coaches, my teammates, IPL franchises, support staff and all my friends for their love and support.” He concluded.

With the appointment of Mohit, Eric Simmons leaves his position as the bowling coach of the franchise. They also appointed Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, after Stephen Fleming was removed from the head coach position at the end of the 2026 season.

Their batting coach, Michael Hussey, is also expected to be removed from the batting coach role, as their Chinna Thala ‘Suresh Raina’ is anticipated to be the new batting coach of the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side for the 2027 season.

There is also discussion of whether MS Dhoni would be part of the IPL 2027, having not played a single game during the 2026 edition of the competition. The auction is expected to take place in December 2026.
