Watch: "No team becomes a champion overnight" — Mohsin Naqvi backs Pakistan amid poor performances

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has responded to the growing criticism in an unusual way, comparing their performance with that of another board. He pointed out the shocking series defeat of the Indian side in the T20Is against Ireland while South Africa lost to Namibia in the tri-series. 

Notably, Pakistan haven’t won a single ICC trophy since winning the Champions Trophy 2017 as they failed to make the semifinals of the next two ODI World Cups in 2019 and 2023 and are currently at the bottom of the points table in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025/27.

Naqvi defended the team against the recent struggles as he addressed the defeats of the top teams against weaker opposition. His comments rapidly caught fire across social media platforms.

“Let me ask you one thing: South Africa lost to Namibia, and India lost to Ireland. Has cricket ended there as well? Yes, one thing is important: whoever we need here, we will definitely bring in. If someone is not clicking or not performing, then what can we do? Every match and every series is important for us.” Naqvi revealed in a video after the defeat against England. 

The PCB chief highlighted the situation around Salman Agha, who was sent back home after the second Test at Lord’s. he struggled for form in recent outings despite being renowned as one of their key players. 

“Agha is such a brilliant player, and yet he is not clicking at the moment for certain reasons. We are not telling him, ‘We asked you to go and rest’; we spoke to him and did everything. So, the objective is not to remove someone from the team. The objective is that if a player is not clicking, then we should make a change.” Naqvi added.

“Yes, absolutely, what happened in the Test match cannot be termed wrong. We have lost these two matches, but I believe that, God willing, we will make progress in the coming days, just as we did in ODIs and T20Is. I have never been afraid of criticism, and I never will be. Those who say cricket has been destroyed since I came.” Naqvi addressed.

Pakistan, in the absence of their captain Babar Azam, lost the opening Test match at Leeds in Headingley against England by an innings and 103 runs. The tourists were bundled out for 171 and 135 in the two innings of the encounter, where only Abdullah Shafique was their long half-centurion.

At Lord’s, during the second clash, they bowled well to restrict the Joe Root-led side to 290 runs. They, in reply, were bowled out for 110 and folded up for 194 in the second innings, and ended up losing the game by 194 runs.

The third game will be at Edgbaston as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has replaced seven players from the current squad, removed their coach Sarfaraz Ahmed from the role, and brought back Mike Hesson.
