Mumbai Cricket Association to introduce central contracts for domestic players during IPL 2026
Mumbai Cricket Association to introduce central contracts from 2026–27 to support domestic players who miss IPL opportunities and ensure financial stability

Mumbai Cricket Association is set to introduce central contracts for its players, marking an important step in improving the domestic cricket structure. This move is aimed at providing better financial security and stability to cricketers who represent Mumbai in domestic tournaments.
The new system will ensure that players receive fixed payments based on their performance and role in the team. It is also expected to motivate young and senior players to stay consistent and committed throughout the season. This step shows the association’s focus on rewarding talent and maintaining high standards in domestic cricket.
With this decision, the Mumbai Cricket Association joins other state bodies in modernising their systems. The central contracts are likely to help in player development and strengthen Mumbai’s position as one of the top teams in Indian domestic cricket.
MCA plans major structural change to support domestic cricketers
The central contract system is mainly aimed at supporting domestic players who often miss out on opportunities in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The initiative is expected to begin from the 2026–27 season and is being seen as a positive and forward-looking step for Mumbai cricket.
Under the proposed structure, players will be divided into three categories — Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. Players in Grade A are likely to earn between INR 12 lakh and INR 20 lakh per year. Those in Grade B will receive between INR 8 lakh and INR 12 lakh, while Grade C players are expected to earn around INR 8 lakh annually. This structured payment system aims to bring more clarity and stability to player earnings.
Ajinkya Naik, president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), stated that this move marks a new phase for Mumbai cricket. He added that the system will provide better financial security, a clear structure, and improved development opportunities for players. The decision was approved by the MCA Apex Council.
To be eligible for these contracts, players must meet certain conditions. They must be registered with the MCA, maintain the required fitness levels, and should not have represented India in any format over the last two seasons. In addition, players must not have been part of any IPL franchise during this period and should be recommended by the selection committee.
Overall, this system is designed to reduce the financial gap between IPL and non-IPL players. It will also reward consistent performers in domestic cricket and encourage young players to stay focused on their game, even if they do not get immediate opportunities in the IPL.
