Mumbai Indians have officially announced Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Pandya takes over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, who led the team to five IPL titles since being appointed captain midway through the 2013 season.

Prior to his return to Mumbai Indians, Pandya had successfully led the Gujarat Titans to consecutive IPL finals during his two-year tenure with the franchise.

Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance at Mumbai Indians, emphasized that appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain for the IPL 2024 season is a strategic move aligned with the team’s legacy-building and commitment to being future-ready. Throughout Mumbai Indians’ history, from Sachin to Harbhajan, Ricky to Rohit, exceptional leadership has been a constant, contributing not only to immediate success but also to the team’s long-term strength.

Expressing gratitude for Rohit Sharma’s outstanding leadership since 2013, Jayawardene hailed his extraordinary tenure, recognizing Rohit as one of the finest captains in IPL history. Under Rohit’s guidance, Mumbai Indians achieved unparalleled success and garnered immense love from fans, making them one of the most successful teams in the league. Jayawardene eagerly anticipates Rohit’s continued guidance and experience, both on and off the field, to further fortify Mumbai Indians. Meanwhile, he extends a warm welcome to Hardik Pandya as the new captain, conveying best wishes for his leadership journey ahead.
