Rashid Khan stays loyal to his nation, Afghanistan, even after receiving multiple offers to change his citizenship. In his book, Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, the celebrated spinner shared multiple unheard events of his life, including offers from India and Australia.
Recounting an event, Rashid Khan claimed that during the IPL 2023 season, when he was playing for the Gujarat Titans (GT), a team official told him that a senior figure from Team India wanted to talk with him.
Rashid Khan received a proposal to play cricket in India
As per the claims in the book, the senior figure straightaway offered the leg spinner Indian citizenship and asked him to play cricket in India. Rashid turned down the proposal immediately.
“I went over and greeted him. We started talking, and he said: ‘The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.' I was surprised by what he was saying and didn't know how to respond. But I smiled and said, ‘Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan,” the spinner said.
He further stated that such offers were nothing new for him as he handed similar proposal from Australia as well. But, he never thought about playing cricket other than for his country, Afghanistan.
“I received such offers (citizenship and playing) from both Australia and India. But I told them, ‘If I don't play for my country, I won't play for any other country either,’” he mentioned further, showing strong love and loyalty for his motherland.
