The Mumbai Indians (MI) are likely to make some changes for their clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) tonight. MI will face GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad at 7.30 PM. Ahead of the match, the Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful teams in the league, are ranked 10th in the 10-team points table, while the Kolkata Knight Riders secured their first win of the season on April 19 against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Like KKR, Chennai Super Kings, and LSG, MI is also among the teams that are struggling to create momentum. After playing 5 matches, they have secured only one win so far and a net run rate of -1.076, while their opponent for tonight, the Gujarat Titans, is in sixth place with two wins in the same number of matches.

Jason Holder is likely to make his debut for the Mumbai Indians vs GT

Mi is expected to redraw their playing combination for the GT game. There are chances to see the former West Indies captain Jason Holder in the playing combination to face the Shubman Gill-led GT. The 34-year-old Caribbean pace bowling all-rounder has years of experience in playing for the national team and in various franchise leagues across the globe. He has played for 5 different teams in the Indian Premier League as well. Jason Holder’s inclusion in the team will provide Mumbai with extra hands in both bowling and batting.

If the team management decides to fit Holder in the playing XI, then who can be dropped from the team? As Holder is a proven all-rounder, he could be in the playing eleven, instead of being named as an impact sub. To make room for Jason Holder in the playing XI, MI will have to drop one overseas player.

Who will be dropped from the team?

In their previous IPL 2026 fixture against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), the three overseas players they used were Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Sherfane Rutherford. Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar took the field as an impact substitution.

Against PBKS, Quinton de Kock registered a magnificent century. It will be tough for the MI management to bench an in-form batter like Quinton. Reports suggest that Rohit Sharma, who missed the previous game because of injury, can be back on the field to face Gujarat. As Sharma is designated opener of the team, between Quinton and Ryan, one can be dropped.  But if they want to keep both of the Proteas in the line-up, then a shuffle in the batting position is also possible. For South Africa, Ryan Rickelton mostly played as a number three batter.

In another equation, if Mumbai chooses to play with four foreigners- Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jason Holder- then Rutherford, who is a middle-order batter, can be their impact player to bolster the batting strength.
