Watch: Rishabh Pant's unnecessary shot dismisses him for 39 — SL vs IND 1st Test

Rishabh Pant would continue to be in the headlines after his unnecessary, reckless shot at the start of the second day of the first Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, which led to his dismissal for 39 runs. Many would raise their eyebrows a bit at the selection of the shot.  

India were in a strong position at the end of the opening day’s play of the first Test match. The entire first session of the second day’s play, meanwhile, was washed out due to the persistent rain, which would have pushed the tourists to bat once in the game and keep time to pick 20 wickets.

The dismissal: Pant charges down the track and holes out to mid-off

The fourth umpire rushed out into the middle with the second new ball as Sri Lanka continued to go with the debutant off-spinner, Keshara Nuwantha. On the first delivery of the over, Pant used his feet and got some bat on the ball to avoid the stumping.

Pant had run down the surface as Nuwantha dropped the ball so short while the wicket-keeper had to dab and got an under edge that rolled past the keeper to the third man fence. On the second ball, the left-handed batter advanced down the track again and drilled the flighted delivery on the bounce to the long-off region.

After letting the third ball go, he ran down the surface and looked to attack, but the ball hit the bottom part of his bat. Pant lost shape on the last. Sonal Dinusha ran to his right and grabbed a fine catch to send the batter back into the dressing room for 39 runs off four boundaries and one six.

Devdutt Padikkal, who celebrated his maiden century on the opening day of the first Test match, continued to make a statement as he brought up his 150 on the second day’s play. The left-handed batter seemed to be in a different mood as none of the bowlers had any answer for the southpaw.

After losing Pant, India also saw the dismissal of KL Rahul, who decided to retire hurt on the opening day. Rahul was undone by the hardness of the new ball that spun sharply, with the Karnataka batter finding the short-leg fielder.

The blue brigade made their way to 340/4 and perhaps have the hope of crossing the 500-run mark to rule out one result of the encounter.
