Both Lucknow Super Giants and the Rajasthan Royals came into their meeting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 after respective defeats at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. It was important for both sides to show a clinical batting and bowling performance under pressure.

The home captain, Rishabh Pant, won the toss and decided to bowl first on the red-soil surface, which wasn’t a great batting track. For them, the aim was to get the better of the successful Royals’ opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

On the very first legal delivery of the evening, Jaiswal survived a leg before the stumps shout against Mohammed Shami, who was smashed for a boundary on the fourth ball down to the fine leg region as the diving fielder had no chance of stopping the ball. Sooryavanshi joined the party from the other end with two successive balls. 

Jaiswal continued to get the better of Shami in the pacer’s second over with a hat-trick of boundaries. The Bengal pacer continued to go full while the southpaw used his power to cross the infield. But it was the right-arm fast bowler who had the last laugh.

The fifth delivery of the over was short in length. He bent his back to get the ball at a good height with the bouncer. Jaiswal looked to hook, but the extra bounce took the glove and flew over the wicket-keeper. Rishabh Pant was airborne and plucked it off his right hand. His jump was perfectly timed to send the southpaw back for 22 runs.

Rajasthan loses three wickets inside power play

Shami removed the number three batter, Dhruv Jurel, for a golden duck. It hit the channel outside the off stump and got to nip it away a touch. Jurel prodded forward and got a thick outside edge into the hands of Pant behind the stumps for a golden duck.

On the last ball of the fourth over, Sooryavanshi, after playing five dot balls against Mohsin Khan, was dismissed for eight runs off 11 balls. Mohsin Khan, who used the pace variations beautifully. The inaugural champions reached 44/3 inside the power play.
