The former captain of the Indian side, Rohit Sharma, got emotional over the national side losing the ODI World Cup against Australia in the final and then turning it around with the T20 World Cup title, having beaten South Africa in the final. He opened up about the heartbreak and the winning moment in a gap of nine months.

India entered the ODI WC 2023 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after winning all 10 of their previous games in the competition. Travis Head’s century guided the Pat Cummins-led side to a victory.

What Rohit Sharma said: “For every 19 November, there is June 29” explained

The defeat against Australia was painful for the players and the fans. At home, they failed to win the title, despite showing their dominance throughout the event with some superb batting and bowling performances.

“This was actually the toughest phase of my career. I have been playing for 19 years, and I had never experienced anything like this before. At one point in 2012, I was playing really badly in Sri Lanka, and I was really frustrated with myself, but that was my goal. But on November 19, it was the goal of the entire nation that we win the World Cup.” Rohit expressed in his Family Show.

“It felt really bad because we were playing so well that it never seemed like we would lose. But that is sport. Just when you think everything is going well, something goes wrong and pushes you down. This is what we have learnt from sport.” He addressed.

The Nagpur-born reflected on the emotional impact of the 2023 final and compared it with the tough periods. He highlighted that setbacks are part of the game, where even the strongest teams can suffer disappointments.

“But I learnt a lot of things from the loss. Maybe that desperation and hunger would not have been visible in the T20 World Cup in 2024. Failures teach you way more things than success.” The former Indian captain added.

“I remember during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the US, I could see that desperation and energy, which was very different. For every 19 November, there is a June 29.” Rohit concluded.

How India won the 2024 T20 World Cup just months after the ODI World Cup final heartbreak

During the ODI WC 2023 final, India were bundled out for 240 runs in the first innings as both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul celebrated their respective fifties. Mitchell Starc returned with figures of 3/55 in 10 overs as Cummins ended up with 2/34 in 10 overs.

Australia completed the chase by six wickets with seven overs to spare. Travis Head drilled a thrilling knock of 137 runs off 120 balls at a strike rate of 114.17 with 15 boundaries and four sixes.
