Rohit Sharma to play for Mumbai in SMAT 2025/26? Report drops bombshell

It has been reported that the former T20 World Cup winning captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, is expected to return for the Mumbai side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025/26.

Even though the former Indian World Cup-winning captain, Rohit Sharma, has retired from the T20I in more than a year, he has shown his desire to feature in the knockouts of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26, a domestic T20 tournament. He is currently featuring for India in the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa.

Rohit could play for Mumbai in the knockouts, which will be held at the Holkar Stadium in Indore from December 12 to 18. The ODI series will be ending on Saturday, December 06, which will give the Nagpur-born around a week of break to be available for the Mumbai side, who won all four of their matches so far in the league stage of the event in Lucknow.

Mumbai has topped the Elite Group A with 16 points in the bag and is primed to enter the knockouts. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made it compulsory for all the Blue Brigade players to feature in domestic cricket when they are not on national duty.

Rohit Sharma to return for Mumbai in SMAT 2025/26 knockouts

Rohit has overall smashed 12248 runs in 450 innings of T20 cricket at an average of 30.85 and a strike rate of 135.21 with the help of 82 half-centuries and eight centuries at the best score of unbeaten 121 runs. He finished his T20I career with 4231 runs in 209 innings at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of 140.89 with five centuries and 32 fifties.

In the last season of the Indian Premier League, Rohit has clubbed 418 runs in 15 innings at an average of nearly 30 and a strike rate of around 150 with four fifties and a best score of 81 runs. In the ongoing ODI series, he has smashed 57 and 14 in the two clashes in Ranchi and Raipur.

It could be a sight for the Mumbai side in the knockouts if they get both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opening the batting in the knockouts, along with Ayush Mhatre and Ajinkya Rahane at number three and four, with Sarfaraz Khan at five.
