At around 3:30 in the afternoon of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, Ryan Rickelton perhaps had the schedule of enjoying a coffee during the contest with a grilled sandwich sitting in the dug-out. But four hours later, he was out in the middle grilling the Hyderabad bowlers.

At the practice session, Quinton de Kock picked up a wrist injury and was ruled out of the contest, which saw the management opening with Ryan Ricketon in the playing eleven. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first on a good surface.

Ryan Rickelton celebrates MI’s fastest century in IPL history

From the very first delivery of the innings, Rickelton was crystal clear in his approach. He welcomed Praful Hinge with a fine six over the deep mid-wicket region before cracking Pat Cummins for two successive boundaries in the third over.

The left-handed batter muscled Sakib Hussain for two sixes in three deliveries during the last over of the powerplay before throwing his bat at the cover-point region for another boundary to finish the first six overs. But he continued the same approach and celebrated his half-century with a huge six off just 23 balls.

After a few dry overs, the Protea batter put his feet on the accelerator against the left-arm spinner, Harsh Dubey. He kneeled and hoisted him over the wide long-on region for a massive six before picking the slot delivery over the bowler’s head for the same result.

Meanwhile, the southpaw clubbed Nitish Reddy for another six into the backward square region before bringing up his century off just 44 balls. It became the fastest century of the Mumbai Indians, getting past 45 balls by Tilak Varma and Sanath Jayasuriya.

MI aim 250+ score after Ricketon’s record century

Mumbai got a strong platform thanks to the opening stand of 93 runs in 7.1 overs, as Will Jacks contributed 46 runs off 22 balls along with Rickelton’s century. The question was also on Hardik’s batting, who found himself unbeaten on 30 runs off 12 balls, thanks to a pair of boundaries and as many sixes.

For Hyderabad, many bowlers found themselves in the stands. But Eshan Malinga was the shining light, who used the pace variations beautifully to have splendid figures in the game, which was played on a belter.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): MI- 229/4 (Ryan Rickelton 110*, Eshan Malinga 1/29) vs SRH.
