Shreyas Iyer’s sister, Shresta, has added another chapter to the ongoing controversy during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, which started after Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was washed out due to rain at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and Shresta put up a post on the social media platforms.

In the ongoing edition of the league, both franchises are in different positions in the points table. The Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings are at the top with four victories in five clashes at a net run rate of +1.067 as they are yet to lose a single clash of the event.

A video has gone viral on social media where Shresta has been seen calling her cat, ‘GG’, which is the short form of the former KKR coach and the current Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

“Hello, guys, meet GG, my new baby. And because GG is still a baby, he still needs to learn a few new things now. So, he perhaps needs to learn how to respond to the word, Chicken. Even when you are sleeping, or wherever you are, you have to respond to the word, chicken.” She expressed in that video that went viral.

It has been a perception among many Iyer fans that the Mumbai-born didn’t get the recognition even after captaining the Knight Riders to their third title of the tournament in 2024 as the mentor, Gambhir, was praised for all the ability and decisions of the franchise.

This also saw the KKR side leaving their captain after winning that edition, with Iyer joining the Punjab Kings (PBKS) as their new leader and taking them to their second final, where they became the runners-up after losing to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Shreyas Iyer’s strong performance seeks India call-up

Iyer has collected 1104 runs in 47 T20Is for the Indian side at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12 with the help of eight half-centuries before being dropped. That time, he used to struggle a lot against the short ball, but he has worked his way in the last few IPL seasons.

Last year, he smashed 604 runs in 17 innings for Punjab at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07 with six half-centuries to his name. Meanwhile, in this edition, he has bettered the number with 203 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 187.96.

His fans hope to see the right-handed batter back in the national side during their Ireland and England tour post the IPL 2026.
