When the BCCI appointed Shreyas Iyer the new captain of the Indian side in the shortest format, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, many fans called it a great decision, given how he led well in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having won the title with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024 and finishing as the runners-up twice for the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2020 and 2025, respectively. 

However, Iyer’s T20I captaincy for the national side hasn’t started well, with the historic two-match series defeat against Ireland in Belfast, followed by two more losses against England at Trent Bridge and Manchester, and a no-result in Durham.

Recently, a video has gone viral on social media platforms in which Shreyas’ sister, Shresta Iyer, urged fans not to make statements about his brother’s leadership, citing examples of how Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and others lost several games as leaders.

“Shubman Gill ho, Virat Kohli toh legend, Rohit Sharma legend … again, Sachin Tendulkar legend. Ye logon ne bhi kaafi saare matches lose kiye hain. But agar aap sirf Shreyas Iyer, Shreyas Iyer hi bolte rahoge, toh maybe aapko kuch to kuch to problem hai... but I feel that he is amazing.” Shresta said in a recent podcast.

“He is a very different personality overall. I think he has a lot to give. Unke jitna aur kisi ke paas nahi hai. Unke paas itna kuch dene ke liye hai. Aur coming time bahut jaldi aane wala hai, woh time bahut jaldi aayega, jab ye bolenge ki Shreyas Iyer is one of the best captains of India. I believe it is already happening.” Shreyas’ sister added.

Shreyas Iyer has been the captain in the IPL for three different franchises, including the Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and the Punjab Kings. Overall, he has led the sides in 87 games and earned 48 victories at a winning percentage of 55.17, making him the fifth-most successful captain of the IPL. 

However, the last few months have been tough for Shreyas as the leader. After starting the campaign with six victories in seven clashes of the first half, they gained only six defeats in the last seven fixtures and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, India have also lost the Ireland series and could also lose the T20I series against England.
