The newly appointed Indian captain, Shreyas Iyer, went after a veteran sports journalist, Vimal Kumar, when the latter asked whether the continuous questions on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s selection were making an impact on the Indian captain during the press conference ahead of the first T20I in Chester-Le-Street.

India, under the same leader, are coming off a 2-0 series defeat against Ireland in Belfast. The T20 World Cup 2026 winning side failed to win both the clashes against the Irish side, which turned out to be their first series defeat in the T20Is after more than a year.

"I'm not following social media" — Shreyas Iyer's full press conference response

Many fans hoped to see the 15-year-old kid making his debut during the Ireland series. But the management decided to back their veteran players. On being asked if the questions of Sooryavanshi have had an effect on him, Shreyas seemed to lose his calm.

I am not seeing anything. Seriously. I have absolutely no idea. I don't follow your news. I don’t use Instagram. I am not following social media. And I didn't hear anything.Iyer said in the press conference.

The Mumbai-born also hinted at the possible debut of the Bihar-born during some part of the England series, where they will play five T20Is before taking part in three ODIs.

It’s difficult for the management to decide when to give you a chance. Look, all the players in the team have performed well; it’s not that only one individual has performed well. But we have to build that opportunity and security so that each individual has confidence going forward into the tournaments.Iyer added.

India begin England T20I series after Ireland series defeat — What's at stake

In Belfast, during the opening T20I of the two-match series against Ireland, India failed to complete the chase of 183 runs and lost the contest by 148 runs, due to some wayward shots which brought their downfall in the chase. Two days later, they fell short of just one run in the 155-run chase to lose the series by a 2-0 margin.

The focus has now moved to the England series. Whether the captain likes it or not, the pressure will surely be on the blue brigade to win the five-match T20I series.
