Watch: Shubman Gill's superb catch dismisses Kamindu Mendis in SL vs IND 2nd Test

On the fourth day’s play of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, Shubman Gill grabbed a superb catch to dismiss the left-handed batter, Kamindu Mendis, which broke the stands and brought the blue brigade back into the game.  

Earlier in the day’s play, Saransh Jain, the left-arm spinner, collected both the last two wickets for a few runs as the visitors decided to enforce the follow-on, keeping the rain threat for the last two days in mind.

In the third innings of the contest, India picked up two early wickets, sending back both the Sri Lanka openers, before Kamindu and Pasindu Sooriyabandara put up a fine partnership of 115 runs for the third wicket to settle the innings. But Prasidh Krishna provided them with the vital breakthrough.

On the very first delivery of the 44th over of the innings, Krishna went with a well-directed short ball, angling it across the left-handed batter. It was around shoulder height as Mendis decided to take it on. He scored a six and four in the previous over but was late on this shot.

Shubman Gill ran back and circled a bit but kept his eyes on the ball. He dived and finally grabbed the ball with both hands. The partnership broke as it opened the gates for the visiting side.

A few overs after the dismissal of Mendis, India sent back the Sri Lankan captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, for 23 runs. The right-handed batter looked to clip Manav Suthar into the on-side and got an inside edge as the ball popped up in the air before Devdutt Padikkal completed an easy catch.

Two overs later, Suthar was able to dismiss Sooriyabandara for 92 runs. He charged down the ground and looked to nail the ball. But the left-arm spinner was clever and kept it wide, and he failed to connect the ball, only to get stumped at the end. Niroshan Dickwella was also dismissed later as Sri Lanka ended the day with a 16-run lead and four wickets in hand.
