Sarfaraz Khan made his big impact as the substitute player coming in for the wicket-keeper, Rishabh Pant, who injured his shoulder during the second day’s play of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Sarfaraz, coming as a substitute in the encounter, didn’t get the chance to feature in either of these two Tests.

Sarfaraz continued his chatter continuously from the short leg position to unsettle the captain of the home side, Dhananjaya de Silva, and wicket-keeper, Niroshan Dickwell, before eventually getting dismissed later on.

Before the left-arm spinner of the Indian side, Manav Suthar, came into the attack and bowled to Dhananjaya, the Sri Lankan captain stopped the play because there was some movement behind the arm of the bowler, as Sarfaraz used the moment to distract him, telling him to pay attention to the ball instead.

“Nothing is there, bro. You are looking there. You are just wasting time, bro. Don’t be scared. You are the captain. Come on, bro.” Sarfaraz was heard saying on the stump microphone. “Why are you worried about that side? Look straight.”

Those few words unsettled Dhananjaya, who looked to defend Suthar and ended up getting an outside edge as the ball deflected off Dhruv Jurel’s gloves and flew towards the fielder at slip. Thanks to a couple of attempts, KL Rahul finally grabbed the catch.

The same happened with Dickwella, who looked to tuck away the leg-side delivery and ended up getting a faint nick. Jurel completed a good low catch behind the wickets off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna.

How Sri Lanka were struggling when the sledging happened

Earlier in the clash, India batted first and posted a massive score of 503 runs for the loss of nine wickets to declare. Captain Shubman Gill and Pant celebrated their fifties, while Devdutt Padikkal and Jurel recorded their respective centuries in the innings.

Padikkal smashed a dashing knock of 117 runs off 193 balls at a strike rate of 60.62, thanks to 12 boundaries, while Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 runs off 177 balls at a strike rate of 64.97, thanks to nine boundaries and two sixes.

Sri Lanka finished the third day’s play with 265/8 as Pasindu Sooriyabandara smacked 80 runs off 133 balls with nine fours, while Sonal Dinusha remained undefeated on 85 runs off 137 balls. Both Suthar and Krishna bagged three wickets each.
