Shubman Gill has started his preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, where he will be on the field as the vice captain of T20I skipper Surya Kumar Yadav. On Friday (August 29, 2025), a video of Gill's net session started to surface on social media platforms. Through the video, we can see the right-handed batter batting in the nets against a pace bowler.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started to believe in Shubman Gill, especially after the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy, where team India leveled the series 2-2 by winning the thrilling 5th Test at The Oval. The top batter was in stunning form against England in the series. The Test captain of Team India scored 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, powered by 4 centuries and a double century. After the series, the Ajit Agarkar-led selectors panel put him into the Asia Cup 2025 squad as the deputy of Yadav.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, Gill was scheduled to play the ongoing Duleep Trophy but pulled himself out because he was 'unwell.' Like cricket fans, former India internationals also have high hopes around his in-form batsman.

Irfan Pathan's statement on Shubman Gill

"With T20 cricket, which he played regularly until last year, the selection committee has a plan for him once he’s free from Test duties. There are many questions in the media, but Indian cricket always follows a plan. The selection board and management have their responsibilities, and moving in a clear direction is key—that’s exactly what seems to be happening with Shubman Gill right now," Irfan Pathan said.

"Shubman Gill’s captaincy will improve with time—he’ll continue learning the art of leadership. But what he has already achieved is impressive. He combines his leadership with excellent batting, performing consistently in one-day cricket as vice-captain."
