Not only has the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 been a source of thrilling cricket, but it has also been important in setting the roadmap for the next T20 World Cup. All eight teams that have made it to the Super Eights Stage of 2026 have also automatically qualified for the 2028 T20 World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. This has given these teams a good deal of breathing room to plan, strategise, and concentrate on their campaigns without having to worry about trying to qualify.
The final teams to qualify for the Super Eights were Pakistan (defeated by Namibia), India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, South Africa, and New Zealand. Those eight teams automatically qualify for the 2028 World Cup when they make it through the Super Eights. Australia and New Zealand are guaranteed places in the 2028 finals because they are co-hosts. Therefore, at this early stage, 10 of the 20 teams taking part in 2028 are already assured. These cricketing giants can go into the T20 World Cup 2028 confident of their place and have the freedom to experiment with their squad as much as possible, thus preparing themselves fully for the next T20 World Cup.

The final ten spots will be allocated based on both ICC Rankings and Regional Qualifiers. It is safe to say that the next three highest ranked T20 International Teams as of March 9, 2026 (likely to be Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland), will have secured a direct entry via their position as at March 9, 2026. The remaining parties will be determined via regional qualifying tournaments, providing opportunities for developing cricket nations to showcase their talents on a global scale.
The qualification process represents an overall strategy from the ICC to reward performance while providing developing teams a competition opportunity. As the Super Eights teams now appear to have secured entry to the 2028 tournament and their ticket home, all eyes turn toward the current iteration of the world cup (2026) which is now in play and will lead to the ultimate winner, as well as solidifying an invitation to participate in the 2028 tournament. High energy cricket can be expected as teams will not only be focusing on being crowned champion in 2026 but also making sure they leave an impression to play in 2028.
