By the ninth over of the innings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Gujarat Titans and the Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the latter was five down for 47 runs. Their top order fell like a pack of cards against the strong pace bowling unit of the home side.

That was when a partnership was brutally needed in the middle order, and Marcus Stoinis partnered with Suryansh Shedge for the 79-run stand for the sixth wicket. The latter was exceptional in tackling the spinners. But to put the Titans under pressure, they needed to take a chance, and the right-handed batter did so.

It was not needed, but the GT captain, Shubman Gill, decided to introduce the left-arm spinner, Manav Suthar, into the attack against two batters, who were set and looked to free their arms by then.

The first ball was tossed up and drifted in towards Stoinis, who eased it past a diving bowler and down to the long-off region for a single. But Shedge was in a different mood. The second delivery was flatter and quicker, but in the slot for the batter, who pumped it down the ground to clear the long-on for a six.

The next delivery was again full and around the half-volley mark as the Mumbai-born launched it towards the long-on region for a 91-meter six. The fourth delivery of the over was short but offered width. Shedge reached out to it and cracked the cut in front of the square to beat the deep extra cover for a four.

The penultimate ball of the over was full as the batter drove it through the covers to get the gap for a boundary. He finished the 14th over of the innings with another six, by picking the full toss around the leg stump and timing it long over the deep mid-wicket for another six.

GT starts decently in 164-run chase against PBKS

Shedge went on to finish with a dashing knock of 57 runs off 29 balls at a strike rate of 196.55 with the help of three boundaries and five sixes. Shouldering on a few more contributions from the lower order, the PBKS ended up with 163/9 in their allotted 20 overs. For GT, Jason Holder ended with figures of 4/24 in four overs.

The home side, meanwhile, lost its captain early in the chase but didn’t back down in showing aggression. A victory would boost their chances to qualify for the playoffs a lot more.
