In the previous season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lucknow Super Giants were blessed with the performance of their opener, Mitchell Marsh, who smashed six half-centuries and one century across 13 innings of the season. But in the ongoing edition, he wasn’t able to get the same dominance with the bat for a longer period.

Marsh provided the Lucknow Super Giants with several strong starts, but he wasn’t able to continue the aggressive knocks outside the power play on most occasions. But their encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium was a golden chance for him to showcase his power.

Marsh indicated his intent in the evening when he leaned forward and lifted the full delivery of Josh Hazlewood over the bowler’s head for a six before replicating the same shot 10 minutes later after the rain break. He ended the second over of Bhuvneshwar Kumar with another six over the cover region.

The T20I captain of the Australian side prodded forward and hammered the drive over the covers against Krunal Pandya before going high over the long-on region for a six. With four against his countryman, he registered his half-century off just 20 balls. This was the joint fourth-fastest fifty by an LSG batter in terms of deliveries.

Marsh went halfway down the surface and picked the length and swiveled across the hammer over the mid-wicket region for his seventh six of the evening. KP dropped the ball short as the right-handed batter cut it to the backward point region for a boundary.

The veteran later backed away and picked up the slot delivery against the left-arm spinner to swing the ball hard through the line for a six. He clubbed Romario Shepherd for three boundaries to celebrate his second century of the campaign in 49 balls. He finished the over with another six over the extra cover as the LSG side made their way to 145 runs for the loss of one wicket in 14 overs as the rain stopped the game.

The rain stopped the action for a while. The home side was ahead in that fixture on a surface that was better suited for batting than the other previous few clashes.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): LSG 155/1 (Mitchell Marsh 109*, Nicholas Pooran 21*, Krunal Pandya 1/31) vs RCB.
