The young left-handed opening batter of the Indian side, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, was seen sitting alone as he was visibly crying after being dropped from the playing XI during the fifth T20I of the five-match series against England, as the management decided to bring in Sanju Samson for the clash in Southampton.
It was always going to be a hard pill to swallow for the youngster, who is just 15 and made his debut last week during the second T20I clash at Old Trafford in Manchester. But his bat hasn’t fired that much in the three games.

The string of losses against England forced the management to return to their original opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson for the fifth T20I encounter in Southampton. Sooryavanshi sat near the dugout, visibly crying as the Indian and English players prepared for the national anthem.

The Bihar-born came into the series on the back of his strong Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). He finished the campaign as the leading run-getter of the tournament with the help of 776 runs in 16 innings at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30 with the help of five half-centuries and one century.
Sooryavanshi was troubled a lot against the short ball in all of the games, especially against Jofra Archer, and collected only 42 runs in the three T20Is at an average of 14, having nailed five sixes and one boundary.
India lose the series 4-0 to England after the 5th T20I defeat
India, under their new captain- Shreyas Iyer, came into this T20I series in England on the back of the two-match T20I series defeat against Ireland. They also lost the England series by a 4-0 margin, including the washed-out encounter during the first T20I at Chester-le-Street in Durham.
“As professionals, we need to learn. We must communicate as much as possible about what we could've done better. Fielding plays a key role in winning matches. When you come overseas, the dimensions of the grounds are different. Need to adapt.” Iyer expressed this in the post-match press conference.
