Beth Mooney's masterclass century fights for Australia against Pakistan.

Australia, whose last league stage clash against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo during the Women’s World Cup 2025 was washed out due to persistent rain, locked horns with Pakistan at the same venue in the event. On a slow surface, they were expected to struggle, as the Asian side made life hard for their batters.

Apart from Beth Mooney, the number four batter, Australia didn’t have any contribution in the batting department for the first 20 overs. They found themselves 76/7 in 21.2 overs before being slipped to 115/8 12 overs later. But Mooney stood there in the middle and posted a final partnership of 106 runs for the ninth wicket with Alana King, who remained unbeaten on 51 runs.

Mooney took a single on the penultimate over to celebrate her maiden century in the World Cup stage. She was dismissed on the last delivery of the first innings for 109 runs in 114 balls with the help of 11 boundaries at a strike rate of 95.61. This helped them post 221/9 in their allotted 50 overs of the first innings.

When Australia lost seven wickets so early in the innings, their first target was to hope of getting over the 150-run mark. The fans also hoped so and hardly thought of crossing the 200-run mark in the first innings. Their 145 runs are the most scored after the fall of the seventh wicket in a women’s ODI innings, overtaking 132 by Scotland against Bangladesh in Lahore this year.

The 106-run ninth-wicket stand between Mooney and King is always the highest ever stand for that wicket in Women’s ODIs. It has surpassed the 77-run stand between Ashleigh Gardner and Kim Garth in 2024 in Sydney. Mooney has now smashed 388 runs in nine innings against Pakistan at a strike rate of two centuries and one fifty.

Australia’s 222-run target will be incredibly challenging for the opponents, especially on a slow surface and against a strong opponent.
