Watch: Dewald Brevis reveals close friendship with Tilak Varma ahead of potential T20 World Cup 2026 face-off
Dewald Brevis calls Tilak Varma his ‘brother’, says facing him in South Africa vs India World Cup clash is special after sharing dreams and Mumbai journey together.

The camaraderie between two cricketers who aren't playing for the same team is always special. Well, playing for different T20 leagues worldwide has brought players together, ending the fierce rivalries that once existed between them. Similarly, South Africa's star batter Dewald Brevis has opened up about his friendship with Tilak Varma in a video shared by ESPNCricinfo on Twitter.
Tilak and Brevis started their IPL career with the Mumbai Indians (MI), and since then, the fans have witnessed their 'brotherhood' even if they aren't playing in the same team anymore. They never failed to click pictures or shy away from speaking about each other. Currently, Tilak plays for MI while Brevis has found a new home with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.
While talking about Tilak, Brevis opened up about how 'special' their bond is and how they dreamt of playing against each other on an international level. Brevis spoke about speaking to Tilak even if they aren't on the same team.
"Now Tilak is like my brother, just this from India. But it's a very special friendship we've got we obviously speak even when I'm not yet, but he's having an incredible career so far, and for us, we always started to get that Mumbai, it's just," said Brevis in the video.
The South African batter even revealed that they are looking forward to meeting in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. While India and South Africa are placed in different groups, they are most likely to face each other in the Super 8 stage.
"We always had the dream of playing against each other at world stage. South Africa against India. So this's pretty special. And to do this now at a World Cup would be special. We will be saying stuff to each other on the field. But that's just from a good place," he added.

Dewald Brevis performance in T20 World Cup 2026
South Africa's one of the best batters,Dewald Brevis, is having a hard time scoring runs. The Proteas have played two matches so far in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, but Brevis hasn't impressed anyone with a big score in the middle order.
In the first game against Canada, he scored just 6 runs, while in the second match against Afghanistan, he scored 23 off 19 balls, including one boundary and six. In 2025, the batter was in an incredible form, slamming centuries and half-centuries with ease. The 22-year-old is playing his first ICC event, and that might be the reason behind the pressure.
However, the Proteas will need him to perform in the upcoming matches since the Super 8 games will get more competitive. Brevis is an incredible batter and has proven his worth in series against India, Australia, and England in the past. Hence, all eyes will be on him in the upcoming encounters.
