Shubman Gill etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match on English soil. He reached the landmark on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston by nudging a single off Josh Tongue. His 200 surpassed the previous best by an Asian captain in England, which was Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 193 at Lord’s in 2011. Gill also broke the long-standing record for the highest score by an Indian batter in England, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval in 1979.
Gill, who scored 147 in the series opener at Leeds on his Test captaincy debut, achieved his first double century in the traditional format in just his second outing as skipper. It took him 311 deliveries, and his composed knock earned him a place among iconic Indian captains like MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni—each of whom has recorded double tons in Tests as captain. Virat Kohli remains the record holder with seven double centuries while leading India, but Gill's feat marks a historic moment for Indian cricket leadership in overseas conditions.
Before Gill, the highest score by an Indian captain in SENA countries was 192 by Mohammed Azharuddin in Auckland in 1990. Azharuddin's 179 at Manchester was the previous best by an Indian skipper in England. With 21 boundaries and two sixes in his innings, Gill joined Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid as the only Indian batters to register double hundreds in England. His innings not only showcased technical brilliance but also marked a generational shift, with the young captain stepping into elite company with calm authority and match-defining impact.
