Since the Indian captain, Shubman Gill, put his feet in the middle of Old Trafford during the fourth of the five-match Test series against England, he was in a theatre. The Manchester crowd made an intense reception for the right-handed batter, especially after his comments on not appreciating the home openers wasting time during the third Test at Lord’s.

Shubman Gill opened his account on the very first delivery with a single, but the pressure was still on from the opponent bowlers. Ben Stokes, the opposite number, kept pushing the batter on the backfoot with a few short balls before attacking him with the outswinging deliveries, which the Punjab-born was leaving comfortably.

Then came a nip-backer from Stokes. He came with the angle from wide of the crease as the batter raised his arm to leave the ball. But it hit him under the knees as the entire England side went for a hard appeal to see the third umpire raise his finger. Gill challenged the decision, but the ball was shown to be hitting stumps. He went back to the dressing room for 12 runs in 23 balls with one boundary.

It has been a constant issue for the batter, who has struggled to understand the in-swinging deliveries. During the final of the World Test Championship, Gill opened his arms to see a nip-backer from Scott Boland disturb the stumps at the Kennington Oval in London. It was also the case during the Duleep Trophy last year and the third Mumbai game against New Zealand.

Gill made a good start to the series and currently has 619 runs in seven innings with two centuries and one double century. The lion’s share of the runs came during their 336-run victory in the second game at Edgbaston. But since Lord’s, England, has found a way to dismiss the batter.

Gill, after a solid and heated press conference on the eve of the Manchester Test, will need to back the words with the score. And this time, he will go up against the fire of the opponents and several spectators on the ground. The reception won’t be easy in the next three innings of the series.
