India's smooth run in the second innings of the Headingly Test met a devastating end as England's Josh Tongue unleashed hell by picking up three quick wickets inside one over. At a time when India were in the driver's seat, the game seemed to be drifting away from England. With four wickets in hand and Shardul on strike, India looked to set England a massive fourth innings target of over 400.

But it all came crashing down during the 91st over of India's second innings. The visitors went from 349-6 to 349-9 in the space of only six deliveries. Tongue went on a rampage, dismissing Shardul and Siraj in two consecutive deliveries. Bumrah was tasked with facing the hat-trick ball. Although he did well to survive the hat-trick ball, he soon gave his wicket away in the very next delivery whilst attempting a reckless shot. As a result of this devastating onslaught from Tongue, the Indian lower order perished without offering any resistance and were bundled out for 364.

Tongue's breathtaking three-wicket maiden triggers a collapse

Tongue achieved his first breakthrough by dismissing the Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur in the very first ball of the over. He pitched it up on a length, inviting Thakur to go for a flashy drive outside off stump. Thakur fell into the trap whilst attempting a drive and was caught in the slip off an outside edge.

The English quick was immediately rewarded the next ball when he had Siraj caught down the leg side as the latter tried to get his bat out of the way. Siraj was struck in his bowling hand and had to wander off the field in some pain. Bumrah came in next to survive the hat-trick ball. Tongue bowled a length delivery at the stumps, which Bumrah negotiated to safety.

But after surviving the hat-trick ball, Bumrah backed himself to go big and attempted a wild hoick across the line, only to be bowled through the gate in a disastrous manner. The shocking loss of three quick wickets left India dumbfounded. Tongue's fiery three-wicket maiden crippled the Indian lower order. Sadly, Krishna could not last long and fell for an 11-ball duck, bringing the innings to a close with India taking a lead of 370 runs.

Tongue registered his best bowling figures against India, finishing with combined figures of 7/158. Tongue played an instrumental role in restricting India to a 370-run lead. Due to his heroics with the ball, England were able to bat again late in the day and finished strongly at 21-0.
