KL Rahul was excellent during the last five-match Test series against England in the United Kingdom (UK), with a couple of centuries in the series as he slowly looked to cement his place in the opening position. Now the aim was to continue the same dominance in the two home Tests against the West Indies to kick off the home season strongly.

In the first fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rahul had a chance as he notched up a fine half-century by the end of the opening day’s play. He left the balls outside the off-stump beautifully before cashing in on the poor deliveries for aggressive shots around the park.

Rahul started the second day’s play with a boundary on the second ball of the 39th over before getting a thick outside edge through the slip corridor for a boundary. When Justin Greaves went short and wide at the Karnataka batter, he cut the wide delivery off behind the square on the off-side for a boundary.

Rahul, in between the boundaries, was taking singles and doubles to keep the scorecard ticking. He shimmied down the surface to get right to the pitch off the ball and hammered Khary Pierre for a boundary to beat the mid-on fielder. He got another four with the sweep shot to get into the 90s during the innings.

With a single on the penultimate over of the morning session, Rahul celebrated his 11th century in the red-ball fixtures. This was also his first red-ball hundred at home as the Test captain. He took his helmet off and kissed the badge with a special celebration for the century. This is the fourth most innings between two Test centuries for India at home.

They went to lunch on 218/3, with the lead already crossing the 50-run mark. However, Rahul couldn’t continue after the lunch break and was dismissed for 100 runs in 197 balls with 12 boundaries as Ravindra Jadeja walked into the middle. Another 100 runs from hereon could be an ominous sign for the visitors.
