More than the importance of the clash between South Africa and the West Indies in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Indian team was looking at it more closely. A win for the West Indies would potentially put the curtains down for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side, as they would not get the better of the NRR.

West Indies made a thumping start with the bat as they posted 29 runs for no damage in the first couple of overs with four boundaries and a couple of sixes to put the Proteas under pressure early on. That was when the importance of the Rainbow Nation was to get back in the game with wickets, and they did with the dismissals of both Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer.

Later, in the fourth over, Lungi Ngidi got two more wickets in his very first over of the innings. After being smashed for two successive boundaries, King got the wicket of Brandon King for 21 runs, as the extra bounce of the surface got the outside edge of the right-handed batter.

On the last ball of the over, Ngidi got the wicket of Roston Chase for two runs. It was another delivery with the extra bounce, as the ball got the inside edge of the blade and crashed into the stumps to see the Caribbean side losing momentum, being restricted to 52/4 in six overs.

Ngidi came back later to get the wicket of Rovman Powell for nine runs. The batter saw the width and didn’t hold himself back on the slap, and drove it on the rise and didn’t bother to keep the ball down to get dismissed.

The middle order of the side has failed outrageously as Ngidi has picked up three wickets in his two overs of the game. Kagiso Rabada also has a fine figure of 2/7 in two overs.

Brief Scores: West Indies 83/7 (Brandon King 21, Lungi Ngidi 3/13) vs South Africa
