The former Indian captain and the opening batter, Rohit Sharma, made a brilliant transformation after taking his Test retirement during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and looked in superb shape during the away three-match ODI series against Australia, and continued the same success with the bat during the home ODI series against South Africa.

The veteran who recently turned out for Mumbai in the 2025/26 Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) has been spending an extended session in training ahead of the upcoming home three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting on January 11. Rohit has been excellent since his return to the ODI format after stepping away from the captaincy of the 50-over format, as he celebrated a fine half-century against Australia at the Adelaide Oval before notching up an unbeaten century in the following clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

The veteran also reached the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings for the first time in his career and moved up to become India’s third-highest run-getter in the format. Last month, he joined an elite club by crossing 20,000 runs in international cricket during the third ODI against South Africa in Vizag.

Rohit, who signed off the 2025 year with 650 runs in just 14 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of more than 100, including two centuries and four half-centuries at the best score of 121, will look to start the new year in the same fashion against the Blackcaps.
