Legendary Australian cricketer Steve Smith has arrived in Lahore ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, despite concerns over a public threat from a Pakistan-based armed group.
His arrival comes during a period of heightened anxiety following a direct warning from the militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which urged overseas players to withdraw from the tournament immediately.

Security Concerns Ahead of PSL 2026
The PSL 2026 faces security challenges as Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a Pakistan-based armed group, issued a warning to overseas players. The group clarified they do not oppose cricket but believe the current security and political situation makes Pakistan unsafe. They warned that any risk would be the responsibility of the players and their boards.
A commander said, “We advise the cricket boards not to send their players. If anything happens, it will not be our responsibility. We have already issued our warning.” The group also vowed to disrupt the tournament if international stars ignore the warning.
Besides security threats, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is dealing with contract issues. Some overseas players have pulled out at the last minute, while others are demanding higher pay due to security concerns and the ongoing West Asia conflict. Several players have breached PSL contracts to join the IPL, which begins two days after PSL’s opening match. The PCB is focused on starting the tournament on schedule and has not yet decided on disciplinary action against withdrawals.
PSL 2026 Schedule
The 11th edition of the PSL will run from March 26 to May 3. Teams will begin assembling in Lahore from March 24 for training sessions. The tournament will start with defending champions Lahore Qalandars facing Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen.
This season features eight teams, including two new franchises — Pindiz and Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen. A total of 44 matches will be played over 39 days, with each team scheduled for 10 matches. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, which include Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the final on May 3 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, with May 4 as the reserve day.
