England perhaps didn’t think of drawing the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester. When they picked two successive wickets in the opening over before the break after taking a lead of over 300 runs, most thought it would finish by the end of the day’s play. But Shubman Gill and KL Raul’s stand and Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar’s partnership stretched their authority.
The former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has given a perfect and fiery reply to the home side, who were not happy when Ben Stokes decided to call the game off at the start of the last over, and didn’t even think of asking the two batters whether they were ready to accept the proposal.
‘Satisfied? I am enormously proud of this team for what they have done. Just four wickets on whatever the pitch might have been to stick around there under pressure. And the question can be asked, did England bat too long before the declaration? When India had England 600 runs to chase at Edgbaston, some of them came out saying that India were scared.’ The former Indian opener expressed on Sony Sports.

The former right-handed batter also hoped that Shubman Gill would ask the question to the opposition on why they stretch their innings a bit longer. Later, he accepted that Gill, a nice guy, won’t do that, but had he been in those shoes personally, Gavaskar would have asked the question.

‘I remember reading somewhere that when England came to India, a few players were told to get 600 runs to chase. That’s what India did. They gave you 600 runs, but you ended up 330-odd runs short. That’s not bravado but loud talk. I want Shubman Gill to ask why England gave them a 300-run lead. Why were they not happy with 250 or something?’ The Mumbai-born addressed.
‘After Stokes got out, why didn’t you declare and give yourself an extra one and a half hours to get other wickets. I hope he asks that. I know he won’t do that. He is a nice guy. He is not this SG. This SG would have surely asked the media, and I am asking now.’ Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
