India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, was spotted during a serious conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and the entire support staff in a small huddle after their stunning 78-run defeat against South Africa in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. The Blue Brigade couldn’t do anything right with the bat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India allowed the Proteas to bounce back from 20/3 to 187 runs on the board, including the two successive sixes against Hardik Pandya on the last two balls of the first innings, which snatched the momentum as the home side crumbled under pressure in the chase and were bundled out for just 111 runs. Sky managed 22-ball 18 before a soft dismissal.

It was their first defeat in the T20 World Cup history since being outplayed by England in 2022 in Adelaide by 10-wickets. And the same timid approach has cost them the game. Shortly after, Sky was seen in the dugout, speaking with Gambhir, bowling coach Morne Morkel, and the batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

Thanks to the fine knock of 63 runs off 35 balls by David Miller with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 180, along with two aggressive contributions of 40+ runs from Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs, the Proteas crossed the 185-run mark in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, only Shivam Dube crossed the 25-run mark for the Indian side, while the other couldn’t stretch it and saw the home side getting bundled out for 111. Marco Jansen bagged four wickets for 22 runs in 3.5 overs.

“We lost too many wickets in the powerplay, and then we couldn’t have small, small partnerships which we wanted for chasing 180-185, but that’s part of the game. We learn from it, we’ll sit back, and then come back stronger. We’ll try to keep it simple, play the same brand of cricket that we want to play, and nothing changes. I think we’ll come back strong.” Sky addressed in the post-match presentation.
