There was a time when Ajitesh Argal shared with Virat Kohli as India’s U-19 team member in the World Cup 2008 triumph as they beat South Africa in the final at Kuala Lumpur. Now, 18 years later, he has stood in the middle again as the umpire to officiate the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash.

Ajitesh Argal walked with Virender Sharma during the encounter between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Rajasthan Royals at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. It’s a journey that speaks less of stardom and more of resilience in a relationship with the game.

Ajitesh Argal’s journey from India’s U-19 triumph to professional cricket

Argal was one of India’s most promising young fast bowlers in his young days. Born in Bhopal, he began playing the game at the age of 10 and represented Madhya Pradesh at the U-14 level. The pacer used to rely a lot on accuracy rather than raw pace as he built his reputation by troubling batters with a tight line and length.

His biggest stage arrived in 2008 as he made a trip to Malaysia with the U-19 side for the World Cup, led by Kohli. And it turned out to be a defining moment. In the rain-hit game against the Proteas, he produced a breathtaking spell of 2/7 in five overs with two maidens. This saw them earn a 12-run victory in the D/L method.

Argal was signed by the Kings XI Punjab after the World Cup, yet never featured in an IPL match. His domestic career, featuring for Baroda, didn’t give him the same momentum.

Overall, he played just 10 first-class matches, six clashes in the shortest format, and three List A games, picking up 29 scalps. His final appearance in the four-day encounter was in 2015 as he slowly faded away from the early promise.

From player to umpire – Argal begins new chapter in IPL 2026

On January 22, Argal officiated the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 clash between the Gujarat Giants and the UP Warriorz before returning to the centre on January 24 for the fixture between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Delhi Capitals. For many watching, he is just another official ensuring the smooth process of the game.

He had to confront life beyond professional cricket and eventually stepped away from the game and built a career as an income tax officer. In 2023, he cleared the BCCI umpiring exam and steadily built his credentials.

His assignments include major domestic games in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Only Nitin Menon is part of the ICC Elite Panel in India, as Argal hopes to reach the mark in the future.

His situation has stood out as a reminder that early success in cricket isn’t always a confirmation of more success in life. But he has created his own game to stay close to the game.
